Why its important that buildings breathe

In today's world, everything breathes: clothing, footwear, sports equipment, medical supplies, hygiene products, building and finishing materials.

It seems as if the breathing material lets in "good" air and lets out "bad" air. Many people think so: wooden walls breathe, fresh air flows through them, so it is pleasant to live in a wooden house. But it is not.

How do building materials breathe?

The word "breathes" itself in this case is not quite appropriate, it's more of a marketing ploy. In fact, "breathing" in construction means something else entirely.

A breathing building material is one that can absorb excess moisture, hold it in and release it back into the air. At the same time the material itself does not lose its functional properties.

In other words, a breathable material absorbs moisture and stays dry, while a non-breathable one gets wet.

Breathable material transfers excess moisture from the rooms to the outside.

Breathable material normalizes the air humidity in the house.

It is good to live in a house made of a breathable material.

Moisture accumulation in the building envelope is the main factor that leads to its destruction, loss of insulating properties, mold and mildew formation, and is responsible for the moisture conditions in the room.

That is why it is important to live in a breathable house. Excess moisture should be removed from the air. So that the wall itself has a margin of safety in case of a sudden increase in humidity. In general, for the construction of a living house, a breathable material is better than a non-breathable. It is better to live in a wooden or brick house than under a glass hood.

In addition to natural air permeability, it is also very important to treat the surface with special products that can repel water (leaks, outside water, water from the roof, etc.), but still allow air to circulate.
