Why is it important for buildings to breathe?

A breathable building material is one that can absorb excess moisture, retain it, and then release it back into the air.

In today's world, everything breathes: clothing, footwear, sports equipment, medical supplies, hygiene products, building, and finishing materials.

It seems as if breathable materials let in "good" air and let out "bad" air. Many people think so: wooden walls breathe, allowing fresh air to flow through them, making it pleasant to live in a wooden house. But this isn't entirely true.

How do building materials breathe?

The term "breathes" in this context is somewhat misleading; it's more of a marketing ploy. In construction, "breathing" means something else entirely.

A breathable building material can absorb excess moisture, retain it, and then release it back into the air—all while maintaining its functional properties.

In other words, a breathable material absorbs moisture and stays dry, while a non-breathable one gets wet.

  • Breathable material transfers excess moisture from indoor spaces to the outside.
  • Breathable material normalizes air humidity in the house.
  • Breathable material creates a healthy living environment.

Moisture accumulation in the building envelope is a primary factor that leads to structural damage, loss of insulation, mold and mildew formation, and unhealthy indoor air.

That's why it's important to live in a breathable house. Excess moisture should be removed from the air to allow the walls a margin of safety in cases of sudden humidity increases. For building a healthy living space, a breathable material is preferable to a non-breathable one. It's better to live in a wooden or brick house than under a glass dome.

In addition to natural air permeability, treating surfaces with water-repellent products that still allow air circulation is crucial. These treatments can repel water from leaks, rain, and roof runoff while maintaining breathability.

Our company, Logic Chemie, has developed such a product: Logic Ex Coating. This water-repellent impregnation is designed for exterior walls, floors, and stairs. The coating penetrates deeply into surface pores and becomes invisible to the eye. While it repels water and dirt, allowing water to form droplets on the surface, it still allows air to circulate.

With our Logic Ex impregnation coating, your home is protected and breathes like never before.
