In a drill tunnel, the wall is often made up of smaller elements, which together form a ring. The tunnel boring machine itself has the equipment on board to place these elements fully automatically. The last element is always a smaller wedge-shaped piece, which, after being deployed, fixes the ring. The tunnel wall elements are made of prefabricated concrete and often already have an integrated water-retaining layer, sealing rubbers and connection options.
After the prefab parts, concrete is being poured to fix the floor. In many cases additional steel is being add for support and to strengthen the tunnel. This also reduces the chances of cracking or damage. After the floor is set a waterproof coating can be applied to prevent water and moisture from entering the tunnel.
Another type of interior lining is sprayed concrete lining (SCL). This is a sprayed concrete wall reinforcement applied on site. This lining is mainly used for tunnels constructed using the NATM method; but also construction pits are often provided with cladding if a cladding has to be applied quickly.
When a tunnel is built concrete expansion joints will be added in between the prefabricated parts. This will take away the pressure caused by movement. The concrete expansion joints prevents cracking of the prefabricated concrete parts and will make the lifespan of the tunnel longer. It is important to insulate the area around the concrete expansion joint to prevent water and moisture entering the tunnel.
In every structure there will also be drainage systems. Even in tunnels it is important to have a drainage system to take away excess water. It is important to seal the area around the drainage system to prevent leaking. Fill in the gaps and make sure to use a suitable product with a strong adhension. his way the tunnel will be protected and leakage is prevented.
